As part of the yearlong celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage in New York State, the Broome-Tioga Suffrage Anniversary Committee announced Thursday details of its signature Broome County event, the 1913 Binghamton Suffrage Parade Reenactment.

“This parade will take participants and spectators back in time,” said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, BTSAC Co-Chair. “It's one thing to read about the suffrage movement, but to experience the excitement surrounding the 1913 convention in Binghamton will be an entirely different way of learning how suffrage was won.”

“A century ago, Broome County played an important role in the fight for women’s suffrage,” said Tioga County Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbrey, BTSAC Co-Chair. “The New York State Woman Suffrage Association held its annual convention in Binghamton in 1913 and used a parade to drum up support from local residents. What better way to honor the legacy of suffrage than by recreating the parade that helped to win over Broome County.”

The 1913 Binghamton Suffrage Parade Reenactment will take place on Saturday October 7th as part of New York's Path Through History Weekend. The parade will have two portions, a historical reenactment and a second section with modern groups looking to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of New York women winning the right to vote.

BTSAC is seeking volunteers for both the historical reenactment and modern sections of the parade. Women and men are needed to portray suffragists and their male sympathizers and will need to dress is period-era attire. Anyone interested in participating in either portion of the parade should fill out the form that can be found on the Broome County Historical Society’s web site.

A workshop will take place this Tuesday, September 12th from 5:30-7:00 PM at the Broome County Regional Farmers Market to show participants how to put together a costume from clothes they already have. Additionally, workshop participants can bring their own vintage clothing buttons to learn how to make a brooch to wear for the parade.
