Performing songs spanning the decades, local seniors took the stage at the second annual Lip Sync Challenge. Contestants mouthed the words and danced along to songs from a variety of musical genres at Binghamton High School’s Helen Foley Theater.

“The Lip Sync Challenge helps our mission of serving the thousands of older adults that rely on our programs and services,” said AOP Executive Director Casondra Hamilton. “More importantly, this event allows some of our area seniors to socialize, have fun, and give back.”

The show was co-organized by AOP and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Aging. “One of my goals is to help our community – and state – become a place where seniors can age well,” said Assemblywoman Lupardo. “That means maintaining and enhancing programs and services for older residents, but also creating new opportunities for recreation to help them stay active. The community’s support of this event shows they share these goals as well.”

Ten performances were judged on originality, stage presence, and lip sync ability by celebrity judges including former television personality Candace Chapman, Jim Ehmke from Newschannel 34, and local entertainer Ryan Wilson. There were also four guest performances that were not judged; two live acts and two video submissions, one from AOP and the other from Lupardo. A nostalgic performance of “Which Way EJ?” performed by members of the Broome West Senior Center took first place; second place went to Diane Dedrick for her performance of Carrie Underwood’s “The Champion,” and third place was awarded to the EPAC Burlesque Sisters who performed “Sparkling Diamonds” from Moulin Rouge. The judges also decided on the spot to create an Honorable Mention award for Dominick Gioffre for his rendition of “Unchained Melody” which he dedicated to his late wife of 62 years, Peggy.
