Assemblyman Doug Smith Hits Ground Running In First 100 Days

New York State Assemblyman Doug Smith who was elected in the April 24th Special Election with 63 percent of the vote following former Assemblyman Al Graf’s election as District Court Judge, has wasted no time getting started.

“As our assemblyman, I will continue the fight to make Long Island a safer and more affordable place to live, work, raise a family, start a business and retire,” said Smith.

As a certified Mathematics Teacher, Smith was named Ranking Minority Member of the New York State Assembly’s Higher Education Committee, which oversees the State University system (SUNY) and licensing of the professions. He is a member of the Energy Committee, Housing Committee, and Committee, on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse - all important to the people of Long Island and his district.

Within his first 100 days, Smith secured $60,000 for a new playground at Michael Murphy Park on Lake Ronkonkoma, $50,000 for new larger signage along Middle Country Road in Centereach and Selden to help improve motorist and pedestrian safety, and $13,000 for the recently- completed Discovery Grove outdoor science classroom at the Sachem Public Library. Smith has also worked to secure $150,000 for downtown revitalization in Holbrook, which will includes upgrades such as new decorative street lighting along Union Avenue.

Smith has already resolved over 100 new constituent cases and co-hosted a Blood Drive that collected 55 pints of blood. “My office on Main Street in Holbrook is open and we are back to serving as point of contact for all government services. Our motto is we refer the problem, not the person. Call us, and even if your issue doesn’t concern state government, we will work to help,” said Smith.

Smith can be reached at his District Office at 991 Main Street, Suite 202 in Holbrook, by email at smithd@nyassembly.gov or by phone at (631) 585-0230.
