Assemblyman Ed Flood (R,C-Port Jefferson) attended a press conference today to oppose Gov. Hochul’s high rise housing plan, which calls for the removal of local municipality decision-making about the direction of neighborhoods. This plan will allow multi-story apartments and condos to be built–rapidly altering suburban areas with no ability for the local government to stop their plans. Joining Flood were Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square), Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin and Eric Swenson from the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee and members of the Assembly Minority.

“Gov. Hochul’s housing plan is overstepping the boundaries between state and local government. It would force municipalities to change their zoning laws to Hochul’s newly-proposed New York Housing Compact requirements. Her pressure on local governments to remodel their communities will not keep New Yorkers from leaving.

“Communities throughout New York are inflamed by Gov. Hochul’s ill-advised plan to build housing where infrastructures cannot sustain. Long Islanders are angered by her threat of overriding local zoning laws and flooding the suburbs with housing that isn't sustainable. Zoning laws are created to preserve the integrity of land while providing adequate housing. Municipalities should not be pressed to exhaust their communities resources to address housing concerns. The ramifications of this act will strip New Yorkers of their tax dollars and voices in their communities.

“I will continue to fight for New Yorkers and local municipalities against the State’s increased spending and overreaching control,” said Flood.
