Assemblyman Braunstein Issues Statements on Recent U.S. Supreme Court Rulings

Statement on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Ruling:

“The U.S. Supreme Court ruling to end constitutional protections for abortion is a dangerous step backward that jeopardizes the health and safety of millions of Americans. A woman's right to choose is fundamental, and access to safe and legal abortion is supported by the majority of the American people. The partisan decision to overturn 50 years of precedent is unconscionable.

Here in New York State, we’ve prepared for this day. In 2019, the New York State Legislature codified Roe v. Wade into state law by passing the Reproductive Health Act, ensuring access to safe and legal abortion. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s devastating ruling, I remain committed to fighting to protect a woman's right to bodily autonomy and reproductive healthcare. New York will continue to lead.”

Statement on SCOTUS Concealed Carry Ruling:

"As our state and our nation are still reeling from mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, the Supreme Court decision to strike down New York State’s concealed carry law is indefensible. Earlier this month, the State Legislature responded to the gun violence epidemic and strengthened gun laws to protect New York State families. I am prepared to work with my colleagues to advance additional common sense gun safety legislation that will help keep New Yorkers safe."
