Public health measure to allow state and local government to meet remotely for the duration of the COVID-19 disaster emergency advances
Today, the New York State Legislature passed a bill introduced by Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) and Senator Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) to extend provisions allowing state and local governments to conduct meetings remotely for the duration of the COVID-19 state disaster emergency. This legislation will allow governments and public bodies to conduct their business in a manner that is widely accessible and protects public health.
Assemblymember Fred Thiele said, “As New York State and local governments continue their ongoing and ever-evolving response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is nothing short of a necessity for local governments to have the authorization to meet safely and without delay. Having heard from local leaders in my constituency and across New York State, it has been made abundantly clear that this bill will continue to ensure safer and more accessible public meetings. I was glad to see this bill receive the support of the Assembly and the Senate and urge the Executive to act on it expeditiously.”
Senator Jim Gaughran said, “As New York local governments and public bodies continue working around the clock to get us through the COVID-19 pandemic, this legislation is a key tool that will enable continuity in government and make public meetings more accessible.”
Association of Towns Executive Director Gerry Geist said, “The Association of Towns is very happy to see the Legislature support extending the authority of public bodies to meet remotely. We are particularly grateful to Assemblyman Thiele and Senator Gaughran for introducing this legislation which is a necessity to protect public health and keep the wheels of local government moving.”
New York Conference of Mayors Executive Director Peter A. Baynes said, “The rise in COVID cases as a result of the omicron variant has once again raised serious concerns among local officials about the safety of conducting in-person meetings. However, these same local officials want to remain both transparent and accessible as they conduct the business of government. NYCOM commends Assemblymember Thiele and Senator Gaughran for sponsoring this legislation which will ensure that people remain safe while the administration of vital public services continues.”
New York State School Boards Association Executive Director Robert S. Schneider said, “School boards across New York state greatly appreciate this action extending their ability to meet virtually for the duration of the COVID-19 disaster emergency. This legislation provides school boards with continued flexibility that enables them to carry out their governance responsibilities safely, while also preserving the rights of members of the public to observe meetings and the democratic process.”
