Thiele: Bicycle Lane and Rest Area Improvements on the Horizon
New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) today has announced upcoming bicycle route/lane improvements and rest area projects on East End State roads.
Proposed projects in the 1st Assembly District include:
May include cleaning of the pavement surface, restriping, replacement of signage, weeding and removal of plants encroaching on shoulder, trimming trees and shrubs that obstruct travel and associated signage, inspection of drainage grates, resetting drainage grates, and removal and replacement of existing drainage grates with bicycle friends drainage grates.
- NY Route 24: I-495 to Older Riverhead Road (23.2 miles- length two-way)
- NY Route 27A: Knoll Road to Tuckahoe Lane (5.6 miles- length two-way)
- NY Route 114: NY Route 27 to North Haven Ferry and through Shelter Island (28.2 mile- length two-way where a shoulder exists)
- NY Route 27: County Road 39 to Montauk Point (62 miles- length two-way)
Rest Areas:
May include mowing, cleaning of pavement surfaces, litter removal, repair and replacement of signage, restriping, and fence repair.
- NY Route 27 Westbound (east of Wainscott Road, Reference Marker No. 27 0705 1692)
Former Public Telephone Areas:
May include fence repair, litter and debris removal, and repairing and/or replacing concrete pads and garbage receptacles.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, these projects have now entered the design phase and are expected to be let during the summer of 2014. Actual construction is estimated to begin in the fall of 2014, lasting up to two years.
