Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) today announced that the New York State Department of Transportation has completed their traffic safety investigation of State Road 24, otherwise known as Flanders Road. The investigation was initiated at the request of Assemblyman Thiele, the Town of Southampton, and members of the Flanders, Riverside & Northampton Community Association (FRNCA) in 2012 in an effort to address ongoing road and traffic safety concerns on this State roadway. The investigation included an accident analysis, delay study, a review of the existing roadway geometry and field observations of the area.

The investigation deemed the installation of two new traffic signals, one at the intersection of SR 24/Flanders Road at Long Neck Blvd. and one at the intersection of SR 24/Flanders Road at Oak Avenue to be appropriate. New crosswalks will also be installed at these two new signalized intersections. The construction and installation of these two new signals and crosswalks is expected to begin by the end of 2015.

The Department of Transportation will also be completing the road resurfacing project this fall. The full resurfacing project, between the traffic circle in Riverside and Bellows Pond Road near Hampton Bays, was initiated during the fall of 2014, but was not competed prior to the onset of cold weather. New line striping and center line rumble strips will also be installed.
