Thiele Opposes Army Corp Plan to Dispose Dredged Materials in Long Island Sound
August 26, 2015
Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) today voiced concerns and opposition to the Army Corp of Engineers DRAFT Long Island Sound Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP) which provides for the continued disposal of dredged materials in the Long Island Sound.
“We should not jeopardize the ecological health and productivity of this fragile estuarine ecosystem. Any open water disposal or burial of dredged materials would seem contradictory to the federal “Estuary of National Significance” designation under the USEPA’s National Estuary Program. The DMMP must focus on outlining alternative disposal mechanisms, technologies, and locations.”
