Six local elected officials, led by Assemblyman Fred Thiele and State Senator Ken LaValle, in a letter dated December 21, 2017, have called upon the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to repave an 8 mile stretch of State Route 114 from Stephen Hands Path to the South Ferry terminal in North Haven. In addition to Thiele and LaValle, the letter was signed by officials from East Hampton Town and Sag Harbor, North Haven, and East Hampton Villages.

A two mile stretch of Route 114 from Route 27 to Stephen Hands Path was repaved in 2016. Currently, the Toilsome Lane intersection with Route 114 is being re-constructed with a roundabout, funded by a state grant.

Three times in the last two years, the elected officials have called upon NYSDOT to repave this 8 mile segment of Route 114. The previous two letters were rebuffed by the State in favor of pothole repair.

Thiele stated, “DOT has repaved the southern terminus of Route 114; Montauk Highway from Southampton to Montauk; and Flanders Road from Riverhead to Hampton Bays. Now, it is clear that the remainder of Route 114 is in dire need of repair. Pothole repair is inadequate. The extreme cold we have experienced so far this winter only guarantees further deterioration this spring. DOT should prepare now and authorize the paving of this road during the spring 2018 construction season.”
