Statement in Response to the Senseless Violence Against Minnesota State Legislators Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman and their Spouses

The tragic killing and violence against state legislators and their spouses in Minnesota is unacceptable, indeed, any political or ideological violence should not be tolerated.
In these divisive times, it is important to remember that as Americans and New Yorkers, our diversity is our strength. We are stronger together even if we disagree with each other. Let us not turn to violence to express discontent, solve disputes or to silence those who see things differently, but instead remember our democracy gives us the ability to have political disagreements without hate or fear.
As an Assemblymember, I serve all of my constituents and do so with honor even though we may not see eye to eye at times. Collectively, we must look for ways to come together and work together to preserve what it means to be an American under our constitutional foundation of liberty, justice and freedom for all.
