Assemblymember Harry B. Bronson (D-Rochester/Chili/Riga/Rush/Wheatland) announced the exemption on state sales tax for clothing, footwear and related items costing $110 or less, will return to New York State beginning April 1.

“This sales tax exemption couldn’t come at a better time for New York’s families and local businesses,” Assemblymember Bronson said. “Even though the economy is slowly recovering, many of our hardworking families are still struggling to get back on their feet and pay for every day necessities. This sales tax break will provide that extra bit of help our communities need.”

To qualify for the tax-free offer, items must be purchased in person, online, by phone or by mail. The program is in its second consecutive year. Last year, for a purchase to qualify for the tax break, it had to cost $55 or less. This year, the amount of an item that qualifies for the exemption has doubled to $110 or less.

“By doubling the exemption from $55 to $110, we are providing consumers with more incentive to shop by giving them a little more for their money,” Assemblymember Bronson said. “And when more people are shopping and spending more, our local businesses get a boost too.”
