Assemblymember Bronson to Sponsor Legislation to Help Active Military Members Save Hundreds Annually
Assemblymember Harry B. Bronson (D-Rochester/Chili/Henrietta) announced that he’s sponsoring legislation to create the Tax Relief for Active Military Service (TRAMS) Act. This measure would provide property tax relief to thousands of active duty military members across New York State.
“The heroic men and women who protect our freedoms deserve all the support we can provide,” said Assemblymember Bronson. “Making these benefits available to service members and their families is an important way for us to show our gratitude and our commitment to honoring their sacrifices.”
The TRAMS Act would help active duty military members save hundreds of dollars each year and increase homeownership among military families by giving them a 10 percent property tax exemption on the assessed value of their home, capped at $10,000. Those currently serving in combat zones would be able to apply for an additional 10 percent exemption, capped at $8,000. Property tax exemptions would be available to members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and reserve units.
Under existing law, military veterans can apply for property tax exemptions of 15 percent of their home’s value, plus an additional 10 percent if they served in a combat zone. The TRAMS Act would make similar benefits available to military members during their tours of duty.
“Owning a home not only provides families with a greater level of security and well-being; it also makes our community a stronger place for all of us to live,” said Assemblymember Bronson. “Increasing homeownership strengthens our local schools, grows our economy and allows families to build stronger ties within the community. Helping make homeownership more affordable for our military heroes is truly an honor.”
