“This year’s state budget makes significant investments in our schools, from kindergarten all the way through college. With a record increase in Foundation Aid, including $75 million in Community Schools funding, schools will have better access to the resources they need to provide our children with a sound education and prepare them for the demands of the 21st-century economy. We also succeeded in getting rid of the Gap Elimination Adjustment once and for all, which has been leaving our schools without their fair share for too long.

“Unfortunately, minority males face significant barriers to success in education and the economy. For that reason, the budget directs $20 million to carry out the goals of the federal My Brother’s Keeper initiative, a program to help at-risk youth overcome obstacles and access more opportunities. These funds will be used to help young men stay on track, achieve their full potential and contribute positively to our communities.

“The budget also recognizes the financial burdens faced by students and their families in the pursuit to earn a college degree. By rejecting the proposed SUNY tuition increases, we are helping our students achieve their goals and start careers without the threat of crushing student loan debt. Funding the great public education system of New York is a top priority in this budget, because investing in our schools is an investment in our future.”
