Assemblymember Bronson’s Bill Expands Workers’ Comp to Include Acupuncture
Assemblymember Harry B. Bronson (D-Rochester/Chili/Henrietta) announced that legislation he authored to expand options for patients treated under the workers’ compensation program passed the Assembly. The legislation would expand workers’ compensation to cover acupuncture performed by a licensed acupuncturist when a physician deems it necessary A.2023-A.
“People who’ve been injured on the job deserve access to every treatment option available,” Bronson said. “For many, acupuncture is a drug-free alternative that relieves pain, is more natural and is more sustainable in the long run.”
Currently, the state’s workers’ compensation program only allows licensed physicians and psychologists to administer their services. Bronson’s bill would allow licensed acupuncturists, who can help relieve back, neck and joint pain, to provide and be reimbursed for their services, if a physician deems it to be a necessary and effective treatment option.
As of January, there are over 3,500 licensed acupuncturists throughout the state. These medical professionals provide a drug-free alternative to alleviate back pain, neck pain, joint pain, headaches and other symptoms. They are also subject to high standards to obtain their license, so patients can be assured they are receiving legitimate, high-quality care.
