In a letter to the Chair of the New York City Planning Commission, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz is requesting that New York City’s zoning resolution relating to the regulation of the number of public parking spaces required by apartment buildings be amended. The assemblyman’s request specifically relates to requirements where group parking facilities are provided, found in Chapter 5 of Article II entitled, Residence District Regulations.

Dinowitz stated, "These zoning regulations are a hodgepodge of exemptions, reductions and waivers, whereby the parking space requirements for many developments is woefully inadequate or virtually non-existent. Many of the communities I represent, and I suspect most of the communities throughout the City as well, are facing a major assault on the quality of life as the result the addition of a large number of residential units in the absence of the addition of significant amounts of parking. This is a situation that must be addressed by the City of New York."

"Therefore I am requesting that you examine Chapter 5 of Article II of the zoning resolution with the goal of amending it to increase the required number of off-street parking spots and to simplify the regulations," concluded Dinowitz.
