I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and the terrible injuries that resulted from the Metro North train derailment at the Spuyten Duyvil station in my district. My heart goes out to the families of those who perished, and I know our entire community joins me in praying for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.

It was shocking to see the cars of the train overturned, including one nearly in the water. But I saw first-hand the amazing work of the people of the FDNY, OEM, NYPD and all first responders there. It was inspiring, and I can only applaud each and every one of them.

This is the second derailment near the Spuyten Duyvil station this year. The cause of this horrific derailment needs to be determined and every step possible needs to be taken to guarantee the safety of everyone who uses our public transportation system, and to make sure that this does not happen again.
