Assemblyman Dinowitz Renominates Chancellor Betty Rosa as Regent for the Bronx
Dr. Rosa, who has served as Regent for the Twelfth Judicial District (Bronx County) since 2008, was elected by her colleagues to be Chancellor in 2016. The New York State Legislature subsequently re-elected Chancellor Rosa to a third five-year term on the 17 member Board of Regents on March 13.
Bronx, NY – Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz spoke for several minutes on the New York State Assembly floor in glowing terms as he nominated Dr. Betty Rosa for a third term as a member of the New York State Board of Regents. Dinowitz’s nomination was seconded by Assemblymembers Latoya Joyner and Michael Benedetto as well as State Senator Jamaal Bailey.
Dr. Rosa has an illustrious and esteemed resume, including two Master of Science in Education degrees from City College of New York (Administration and Supervision) and Lehman College (Bilingual Education) and an Ed. M. and Ed. D. from Harvard University (Administration, Planning, and Social Policy). Dr. Rosa also has three decades of experience in New York City’s public school system ranging from a bilingual paraprofessional, teacher, and reading coordinator to school principal, superintendent, and senior superintendent for the Bronx. Her long career in education and education policy exemplifies the ideals of a public education system, ensuring that all children have access to high quality educational opportunities regardless of language barriers or special education needs.
The Board of Regents, established in 1784, is the oldest continuously state education entity in the United States. The Regents are unpaid and preside over the University of the State of New York and the State Education Department. It is comprised of individuals from each of the state’s 13 judicial districts and four at-large members, and each member must be elected by the New York State legislature. The Board of Regents meets once per month to guide education policy in New York State, covering important topics such as charter schools, professional licenses and certification, special education, state aid, and others.
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) said: “The Bronx is tremendously fortunate to have someone like Dr. Betty Rosa represent our needs on the Board of Regents. She has clearly earned the respect of her peers, who elected her as Chancellor two years ago, and certainly she has earned my respect and admiration as well. Either directly or indirectly, the work of Chancellor Rosa has benefitted hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of students across New York State over the past 30 years.”
