Legislation by Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas That Expands Education and Outreach for Maternal Health Is Signed into Law by Governor Cuomo
New York, NY — Today Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation sponsored by Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas and Senator Jeremy Cooney into law (S.3475/A.6531), that authorizes the New York State Department of Health to provide education and outreach programming on preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious medical condition caused by high blood pressure any time after the twentieth week of pregnancy. If left untreated, it can lead to organ damage, strokes or seizures, premature birth, and even death. In many cases, preeclampsia can be detected early on or prevented altogether.
The legislation, known as Lian’s law, is named for Lian Shalala Gravelle, a resident of New York, who passed away six months after giving birth to her children from complications from preeclampsia.
“Lian Shalala Gravelle died from preeclampsia-related complications and her loss reminds us of how serious we must take maternal and reproductive health. People who give birth, particularly women of color, are vulnerable to various health issues as they attempt to raise families,” said Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas. “Preeclampsia causes premature births and can cause other health issues for pregnant people so we must make education and outreach a priority. We’re doing this in honor of Lian and her family. I thank Senator Cooney for asking me to sponsor this legislation with him and am committed to doing more for the health of our communities.”
Senator Jeremy Cooney said, "Lian educated new mothers about dangerous maternal health conditions, such as preeclampsia. Although we tragically lost Lian, her spirit is embodied in this life-saving legislation. On behalf of Lian's twin boys, I want to thank the Governor for signing this bill into law and providing increased access to maternal health resources."
