Giglio Notifies Riverhead and Brookhaven Residents of Planned Mosquito Larvicide Treatments

Suffolk County to conduct aerial treatment of marsh areas June 16-18

Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C-Riverhead) is notifying residents that the Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control will conduct aerial mosquito larvicide treatments in portions of marshlands located throughout Suffolk County, including areas in the towns of Riverhead and Brookhaven, from June 16 through June 18 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The treatments, which will be conducted by low-altitude helicopter, are intended to control mosquito larvae in marsh areas and reduce mosquito populations. According to Suffolk County officials, weather conditions may affect scheduling, and work may continue on the next suitable day if necessary.

According to Suffolk County, marsh areas expected to be treated in the Town of Riverhead include Indian Island, Overlook–Aquebogue, Crescent Duck Farm, Aquebogue Farm, and Millar Farm. In the Town of Brookhaven, anticipated treatment areas include Fireplace Neck, Smith Point, Johns Neck Creek, Mastic Beach, Bellport Bay, Beaverdam Creek, Point O’Woods, Grove Avenue, and Pier Avenue, among others.

The county stated that the treatment will use VectoPrime FG, a larvicide registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Officials indicated no special precautions are recommended for residents, as applications will occur at a low altitude over marsh areas and human exposure is considered unlikely.
