Assemblyman DeStefano Joins Bipartisan Leaders to Combat Drugged Driving Crisis

Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford) today joined bipartisan lawmakers, law enforcement officials and advocates at a press conference to address the growing threat of drugged driving on New York’s roadways. As drug-impaired driving incidents continue to rise, leaders from both sides of the aisle are calling for stronger enforcement measures, improved roadside testing and greater public awareness to prevent further tragedies.

“Too many lives are being lost because of reckless decisions behind the wheel,” said DeStefano. “We’ve made progress in raising awareness about drunk driving, but we must also confront the increasing dangers of drug-impaired driving. Strengthening our laws and enforcement efforts is critical to keeping our roads safe.”

At the press conference, law enforcement officials detailed the challenges of detecting and prosecuting drugged drivers, emphasizing the need for advanced roadside testing and better training for officers. Advocates and victims’ families also shared powerful stories, underscoring the devastating impact drug-impaired driving has on New York communities.

DeStefano and his colleagues are pushing for legislation that would expand drug recognition training for police, increase penalties for repeat offenders and invest in public education campaigns to deter drug-impaired driving.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe is not a partisan issue,” DeStefano added. “We are standing together—Minority and Majority lawmakers—to demand action, protect lives and ensure justice is served for victims of drugged driving.”
