“For years, health care has been at the forefront in national politics, but today the debate hit home as members of the Assembly Majority pushed for single-payer health care in New York state. This could be disastrous for taxpayers as it could raise our income taxes by $1,600 per month, totaling nearly $18,000 annually. The proposal would also take away control from taxpayers, placing health care decisions in the hands of the government. If we implement a mandated and rationed health care system, it would really decrease the quality of care and yield devastating results for our state.

There are numerous alternatives to single-payer health care that won’t hurt state residents, but it’s critical we explore our options before making any radical decisions. One solution could be to establish 529-style healthcare savings accounts which would give the power to the people by letting patients decide on their healthcare provider. These accounts would be supplemented by the state using existing state resources and funding to ensure that all New Yorkers have the opportunity to be at the table when the health care market competes for their business. I urge the Legislature to work together on a health care system that will benefit all New Yorkers without raising our taxes.”
