Mikulin: A Solid Relationship Between New York Law Enforcement Agencies and U.S. Ice Will Help Restore Public Safety

A Statement from Assemblyman John Mikulin (R,C-Bethpage) in response to the Assembly and Senate press conference on Feb. 28, 2024, highlighting “Laken’s Law” (A.9167), which aims to restore cooperation between New York courts and law enforcement agencies with federal immigration authorities in cases involving the arrest or conviction of illegal migrants.

“American citizens need to be protected so families like Laken Riley do not lose a loved one. According to federal authorities, Laken Riley’s killer was arrested and released by local police in New York City before federal authorities could take action to try to detain him. New York’s policy to protect individuals who are here illegally cannot be ignored as it arguably led to Laken’s murder. Communication between New York’s law enforcement agencies and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must be re-established to prevent future crimes in order to protect individuals like Laken.”
