Child Victims Act
The Child Victims Act was signed into law. For too long, many survivors of childhood sexual abuse have had to live with their trauma while their perpetrators escaped justice because of New York’s inadequate laws. That ends now.
 
With over 63,000 children sexually abused each year – and that is just the number of cases that are actually reported – it’s imperative that victims have the support they need to recover and see justice served. The Child Victims Act ensures that they are finally given their day in court and that their abusers are exposed and held accountable.
 
The bill extends the statutes of limitations for criminal cases, allowing them to be commenced until the victim turns age 28 for felonies and age 25 for misdemeanors. The bill also institutes a one-year “look-back window” during which past victims will be able to seek justice in court. Additionally, the measure would push back the statute of limitations to permit civil actions to be brought until the victim’s 55th birthday. The Child Victims Act also treats public and private entities equally by removing the current notice of claim requirement for public entities.

Cohoes Waterford Bridge 2018 Project of the Year
The New York State Department of Transportation recently announced that a $21.9 million replacement of the Cohoes Waterford Bridge over the Mohawk River between Albany and Saratoga counties has been named 2018 Project of the Year for structures projects between $5 and $25 million by the American Public Works Association’s New York Chapter, Capital Branch.
 
I am excited to hear that the Cohoes Waterford Bridge project has been named ‘2018 Project of the Year’. As the former Mayor of Cohoes, this is a project I worked on for many years, so I recognize its importance in enhancing safety for all residents.

Local Emergency Management Accreditation Program – Albany County
Governor Cuomo recently announced that Albany County has achieved accreditation as part of the Local Emergency Management Accreditation Program. The program, developed in partnership with the New York State Emergency Management Association, is designed to highlight and promote proactive local emergency management agencies in New York State
 
Thank you to Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple for their work in achieving this accreditation from the state.

The Times Union's and online job recruitment site Monster will host their annual Health Career Job Fair, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the Albany Marriott hotel, 189 Wolf Road, Colonie.
 
Bring a hardcopy of your resume to have it scanned for free. All participating companies will receive a copy of resumes within a week.

New York State Museum Winter Break Activities
The New York State Museum will be offering a variety of educational and hands on activities throughout the winter break week.
 
From paper crafts to lab experiments and exhibit tours, there will be plenty of programs on hand to keep the entire family engaged and entertained.

 South Troy Pool

Good news for Troy residents as Mayor Madden and the Common Council are working together to renovate the South Troy pool this summer and build a new pool in Knickerbocker Park hopefully next year.

With the support of Speaker Heastie in the Assembly I was able to secure a total of $375k in SAM grants to help the city officials and residents reduce their costs to this project. Not time yet to break out the sunscreen but good to see the wheels are in motion.

A nice shout to NYS Parks who have provided some critical guidance and support in this effort as well.
