Assemblyman John McGowan (R,C-Rockland) attended a press conference today, Feb. 15, 2024, to advocate for additional Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funding in the state budget, which includes critical infrastructure funding for New York’s local roads, bridges and culverts. McGowan and his colleagues in the Assembly Minority are calling for this year’s final budget to restore Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed $60 million cut to CHIPS base aid and then increase the CHIPS base funding level by $200 million to a total of $798.1 million.

“Local roads and highway infrastructure serve as the backbone of our communities, facilitating economic growth and connecting people to essential services. Well-maintained infrastructure reduces the risk of accidents, improves emergency response times and provides reliable access to health care, education and other essential services. Additionally, efficient transportation systems contribute to reduced congestion, lower commute times and improved air quality, enhancing overall community well-being. Investing in the upkeep and expansion of local roads and highways is not just a matter of convenience—it is a strategic investment in the long-term prosperity and resilience of communities. By prioritizing CHIPS funding each year, we can enhance connectivity, safety and accessibility and improve the quality of life for generations to come.
