Giglio Hails Movement On Stronger Megan’s Law
Sex Offender Registry provisions are more strict
Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,C,I-Gowanda) called today’s bipartisan agreement between both houses of the state Legislature regarding a stronger Megan’s Law “a victory for children and families.”
Under the agreement, the most serious sex offenders – classified as Level 3 predators – must continue registering for life on the Megan’s Law Sex Offender Registry. Level 2 sex offenders now also face lifetime registration requirements.
“It is exceedingly clear that the Assembly minority conference led the charge for this extra safeguard, and now we can say our children and families are safer today then yesterday,” said Giglio.
Also under the agreement, Level 2 sex offenders who are currently required to register for 10 years must submit their information for 30 years. They can petition judges for removal only after the 30 years ends.
Lowest-risk Level 1 offenders who have been required to register for 10 years must register for 20 years under the new law.
Nearly 170 Level 1 and 2 sex offenders were due to drop off the Megan's Law registry on January 21, with the total jumping to 226 by the end of the month. Now that will not happen.
