Giglio to Nominate Scholarship Recipient to SUNY Maritime

Application deadline for four-year scholarship extended to April 1

Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,I,C-Gowanda) today announced he will nominate one qualified high school student from the 149th Assembly District to receive a four-year tuition scholarship to attend SUNY Maritime College. Nomination applications are due April 1.

SUNY Maritime College, located on the Throggs Neck peninsula in New York City, was established in 1874 and is the nation’s oldest maritime school.

“SUNY Maritime College ranks among the most prestigious programs in the country,” said Giglio. “Students are introduced to challenging course work in a variety of fields and learn fundamental leadership skills through practical, hands-on experience aboard the U.S. Coast Guard training vessel. This is an exciting opportunity that I encourage any interested high school student to take advantage of.”

The scholarship is being offered as part of the school’s Cadet Appointment Program. While pursuing undergraduate studies at SUNY Maritime in engineering, business or science, cadets also prepare for licensure as ship officers in the U.S. Merchant Marines. Graduates of SUNY Maritime College have a proven 100% job placement rate and 2007 graduates earned an average of $59,000. Cadets are not required to serve in the military upon graduation.

To be eligible, students must have a combined SAT score of at least 1100, a high school grade point average of at least 90 percent, demonstrated leadership and community experience and a be a resident of the 149th Assembly District.
