“Gov. Hochul’s plan to increase housing in the suburbs will certainly backfire,” said Brown. “The plan fails to respect the authority of local zoning control and overrides the state’s environmental review laws and the voices of local residents. While there is a need to diversify the housing stock on Long Island, the housing compact should be taken out of the budget completely until a better plan which provides incentives for housing development from the bottom up is formulated. This heavy-handed, top-down, one-size-fits-all approach threatens Long Island communities and our way of life.”
