On Monday, Aug. 7, the National Weather Service issued four warnings for Lewis and Jefferson counties after a tornado hit the area in the evening. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado’s classification as EF-3 tornado, the third most severe kind. The tornado had a peak speed of 140 mph and tore through Lewis County for 16 miles, cutting through the towns of Lewis and Turin. Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C-Black River) and Scott Gray (R-Watertown) expressed their concern and immediate commitment to assist the members of the community who have been affected.

“My thoughts go out to those affected by the tornado that passed through Monday evening. There was significant damage to Turin barns, residential houses, the ski center and Steak and Brew Restaurant. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries to people or animals. Tornadoes are unpredictable and can be alarming, I commend the disaster restoration team for being quick and courageous in the aftermath. Be sure to stay alert with local news for any changes and updates,” said Blankenbush.

“In the event of another severe storm or tornado, be sure to move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, stay away from windows, and if you’re outdoors or in a vehicle, move to the closest shelter and be alert to flying debris,” Gray said.

“I’m incredibly grateful to hear no one was hurt in the recent tornado. The safety and well-being of our community are of utmost importance. It’s imperative that we’re prepared to take cover and shelter in place during severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and have a plan in place should we lose power. It was reported more than 6,200 people lost power in Lewis County alone from the storm,” continued Gray.
