North Country End of September Fall Activities
Legislative Column by Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C-Black River)
After months of unpredictable storms and burning temperatures, we’ve made it to fall. This week, those in the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands-Seaway regions will begin to notice color changes in their landscape. The I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report recorded a 10% hue change gradually encompassing the North Country. It's essential to prioritize safety while enjoying outdoor activities during this season and prepare for the chilling weather. Many counties will be bringing out the pumpkins and hosting family-friendly festivities.
In Jefferson County, the New Bremen Firehouse will be hosting a Harvest and Craft Fair on September 30. There will be various local craft vendors and raffle tickets to purchase to support the New Bremen Fire Department AUX. Lewis County Office for the Aging will also be hosting a public event on Friday, September 29 at the firehall. There will be a flu shot clinic and vendors for visitors to browse through. For lunch, turkey and all the trimmings will be provided following a public hearing. The day will end with a performance by our very own North County talent, the Adirondack Playboys.
For St. Lawrence County, September is Local Foods Month. On September 23, families can stop by the Stauffer Farms and spend the day absorbed in the daily life of a farmer. Be sure to plan a day at Applewood Orchards as well for the classic apple and pumpkin picking to stock up on Thanksgiving treats. For folks in Oneida County, a trip to Remsen Barn during the September 23 weekend will feature exhibits from local businesses and contests all ages can participate in. Be sure to visit your county’s website for more information and to stay updated with events details.
This month is a great opportunity to give thanks to our farmers who work tirelessly to provide fresh food for our community. They continue to give back by opening their homes to the public to learn more about farming and take part in the process. When hiking, wear sturdy footwear with good traction to navigate potentially slippery trails covered in fallen leaves. Always be mindful of the earlier sunsets and bring adequate lighting if you plan to be outdoors after dark. Whether you're hiking, biking or simply taking a leisurely stroll through the autumn beauty, embracing safety measures ensures that your experience amidst the breathtaking foliage remains enjoyable and accident-free.
