We are approaching the end of October, which means the Halloween festivities will begin to pick up. As we dress up and admire the carved pumpkins and spooky decorations, I hope this column will be useful and serve as a reminder of potential hazards on this holiday.

The safety of children is of utmost priority. If possible, avoid dark-colored costumes; if necessary, add strips of reflective tape to clothing to improve visibility. Young and new drivers should maintain their full attention on the roads and be aware of children crossing. Children may be wearing darker clothing that may be difficult to spot in the evening. When entering driveways and alleys, operating at a slower speed may be necessary.

As always, holidays can increase the likelihood of impaired driving. As usual, during this holiday, there will be a severe crackdown on driving under the influence. Be vigilant when on the roads and report any suspicious driving activities. For the safety of our children and community members, please do not drink and drive and discourage others from doing so.

This is one of the only days when candy feels like a precious commodity. It is also a day when additional dangers exist. Remind our children to beware of taking foods and candy that are not properly packaged. Food allergies may not be clearly indicated, and intentions may not be pure. Advise children to refrain from eating any treats and to make it a habit to check each piece for flaws or signs of tampering.

Undoubtedly, with our amazing fall season, Halloween is truly one of the most enjoyed festivities in the Mohawk Valley and the North County. We wish you a safe and memorable holiday!
