Assemblyman Blankenbush Meets with Sportsmen from 122nd AD
Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush met with several sportsmen from the 122nd Assembly District as part of the Assembly Minority Sportsmen and Outdoor Legislative Awareness Day on Tuesday.
“Hunting, fishing, trapping and outdoor recreation contribute more than $6 billion to the New York State economy annually,” said Assemblyman Blankenbush. “Unfortunately, though, hunting is one of the most regulated sports in the state, and the fees on fishing, ATVs, and snowmobiling continue to add up. Today’s visit from hundreds of sportsmen from across the state highlights just how important outdoor sports and recreation are to New York, and as such, how government needs to be more mindful of the negative economic impact when creating more regulations and fees.”
Assemblyman Blankenbush also noted that snowmobiling is a billion dollar industry with over 131,000 snowmobiles registered statewide in 2010-2011. Snowmobiling is especially important in the 122nd district, as the numerous county and state groomed trails across Lewis and Oswego counties, along with the abundance of snow, make the Tug Hill Plateau a destination for snowmobile enthusiasts from across the country.
In addition, ATVs are used by 1.9 million New Yorkers each year and are economically vital to the North Country. The 122nd district also boasts some of the best fishing in the country, with renowned bass and salmon populations in Lake Ontario and the Salmon River.
The event, which included over two dozen vendors from around the state, highlighted the rich tradition of outdoor activities in the lives of New York’s residents and the economy, and offered hunters, sportsmen and outdoor recreation enthusiasts from around the state an opportunity to meet with their legislators.
“It is important to me that sportsmen and women have the opportunity to network with colleagues and meet with their legislators to discuss the important role of hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation to the state,” said Assemblyman Blankenbush.
