Celebrate Agriculture, Arts And Crafts, And Adventure At The County Fair
Legislative Column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)
Recently, the Jefferson County Fair, the oldest continually running fair in the nation, held a parade to mark its opening. It’s that time of the year when our county fairs offer more than just rides and amusements. These fairs provide us with opportunities to experience and learn about our cultural and agricultural heritage.
Fairs have a long history in this world, and at the core was a focus on agriculture and livestock shows. I know those who participate – whether they’re showing an animal, displaying arts and crafts, or demonstrating an outdoor sport or skill – love the opportunities they have to educate and engage the public regarding items and issues about which they are most passionate.
As Ranking Minority member on the Assembly Agriculture Committee, I made it my goal to ensure that $500,000 in reimbursements was set aside for agricultural competitions at our county fairs to help raise public awareness about this crucial industry in our state.
Although the Jefferson County Fair is wrapping up, there are many other fairs for you to visit. Here are some upcoming local county fairs:
