Our Struggling Farms Need Assistance Too
A statement from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)
As our economy continues to feel the dire impacts of the coronavirus, in good conscience, I cannot stand idly by as we watch our agricultural industry plummet. Businesses, restaurants and school districts are some of the biggest buyers of dairy and agricultural goods; however, because of their reduced hours, and in many cases, full closures, the demand for our farmers products are at an all-time low. Although the demand has dropped in certain sectors because of the shutdown, we still need to eat. We need to help get our food to where it needs to go and adjust to this new reality. Our farmers are left having to dump their products, which in my opinion, is completely unacceptable.
Im proud to stand alongside my colleague, Assemblyman Chris Tague, in advocating for the No Farms No Food Act of 2020, which would reimburse our farmers at market value for any products they have lost because of the coronavirus.
Our farmers, especially our dairy farmers, were already struggling before the coronavirus. Now, they need our assistance more than ever. We need to support those who feed us during this time. Our agriculture community knows the importance of local supply. Together we will weather this storm.
