Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre Passes Bill Providing Relief for Homeowners Affected by Superstorm Sandy
Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Babylon) announced that legislation she sponsored to extend the tax exemption application deadline for property owners affected by Superstorm Sandy has passed both houses of the Legislature (A. 9424).
“Superstorm Sandy devastated our community almost 10 years ago, but many hurricane-impacted homeowners are still working on completing repairs,” Jean-Pierre said. “The COVID-19 pandemic set reconstruction efforts back even further for many Long Island homeowners, some of whom are still waiting for certificates of occupancy due to construction delays. I sponsored this legislation to protect these residents from higher property assessments while paying down debt associated with crucial home repairs. I urge the governor to sign this vital bill into law as soon as possible.”
If the governor signs the bill into law, eligible Long Island property owners would have until March 1, 2024, to apply for the tax exemption. The exemption provides a graduated tax mechanism for certain eligible Superstorm Sandy-impacted homeowners. Higher property taxes and the federal government capping the state and local tax (SALT) deduction have exacerbated the financial difficulties for homeowners who are still working to rebuild, noted Jean-Pierre.
