Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre’s Bill Honoring Late State Trooper Passes Assembly

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Babylon) announced that a bill she sponsored to rename the Southern State Parkway Wellwood Avenue overpass on County Route 3 the State Trooper Martin J. Kerins Memorial Bridge has passed Assembly (A.9081).

“It’s important that we honor the heroic first responders who lost their lives in the line of duty protecting and serving our communities,” stated Jean-Pierre. “State Trooper Kerins lost his life at a young age due to a motorcycle accident that was out of his control, a stark reminder of how precious life is. Naming this roadway after him will serve as a memorial to honor the life and ultimate sacrifice Trooper Kerins made in his hometown of Babylon.”

New York State Police Trooper Martin J. Kerins was injured on Aug. 21, 1938, when his motorcycle blew a tire in Babylon, causing him to strike his head after being thrown to the pavement. Kerins would eventually succumb to his injuries two days later, tragically ending his five years of watch at the age of 28.[1]
