Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre Honors Local Women of Distinction
Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Babylon) honored local, remarkable women on Friday, March 3, at her third annual Women of Distinction Awards ceremony in Amityville. The Women of Distinction Awards, held in conjunction with Women’s History Month, recognizes women who have made an impact in the community in various fields, including volunteer service, business and education.
“This year’s women of distinction are truly an inspiration,” said Jean-Pierre. “Each one of them has overcome challenges and gone above and beyond for their communities, making a difference in people’s lives each and every day.”
The theme for this year’s awards was “Women in Labor and Business.” Honorees included: Kawaljeet Ahuja, Corine Amico, Gloria Cannon, Sondra Cochrane, Jane Guidone, Viscel C. Moore, Amanda Munz, Martha Peterson, Dr. Pamela C. Allen Robinson, Liuba Grechen Shirley, Xiomara Smith-Roman, Yashika M. Stewart, Sister Lenore Toscano, Marta Wesolowski and Cheryl Williams. Ruth Anderson-Carter and Dotty Coleman were honored posthumously.
Jean-Pierre also held a Women’s History Month art contest for local elementary students to submit drawings of their favorite New York women. Ava Smith from Daniel Street Elementary School in Lindenhurst, who drew a picture of Lucille Ball, received an award for her artwork at the ceremony. The drawing will be featured on next year’s Women’s History Month activity booklet.
