Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre: Assembly Moves to ‘Raise the Age’ in One-House Budget Proposal
“Our justice system has failed our children. It treats teenagers like adults, and it simply isn’t working. The evidence has shown us time and time again that youth placed in adult facilities are less likely to be rehabilitated, have a greater chance of reoffending, and are at greater risk of abuse. This isn’t justice. Kids deserve the chance to learn from their mistakes and turn their lives around.”
“That’s why I was proud to vote for the Assembly budget proposal, which raises the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 years of age and prohibits juvenile defendants from being placed in an adult facility. Troubled youth should be given the tools to become productive members of society, not be sentenced to a life of crime.”
“New York is one of only two states that try all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. By raising the age, we will improve public safety and help at-risk youth build a brighter future for themselves.”
