Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre: State Budget Invests in Long Island
“Today, I helped pass the 2017-18 state budget. While it has taken longer than expected, the results ensure that Long Island can continue moving forward through investments in education, criminal justice reforms and vital funding for water infrastructure.
“To continue moving our state in the right direction, the budget eliminates barriers our children face on the path to success. New York is taking a major step to level the playing field for students, including a plan to provide free SUNY and CUNY tuition for middle-class families and a measure raising the age of criminal responsibility so that a foolish, youthful decision doesn’t derail a teen’s future.
“Additionally, the state budget invests in repairing New York’s aging infrastructure. For the thousands of roads and waterways across the state and on Long Island, this year’s budget allocates $2.5 billion to repair and update water infrastructure, as well as vital funding for public transit programs. The budget also extends the state millionaires tax – generating much-needed revenue for New York and funding important services like education and health care – for two years. As we look toward the future, I’ll continue fighting to give Long Island families the resources to thrive.”
