New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Babylon) recently participated in the 47th Annual Legislative Conference Weekend in Albany hosted by the New York State Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian (BPHA) Legislators. The annual weekend features dozens of workshops pertaining to issues affecting minority communities. Jean-Pierre sponsored several workshops, including those in the areas of mental health, wages, challenges from the federal government and public-private partnerships catered to young men of color. In addition, she co-sponsored this year’s Women of Color “PowHer Luncheon” in the Assembly Chamber, which featured a panel discussion and remarks from several distinguished guests including Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray and NYC Public Advocate Letitia “Tish” James.
Several Long Islanders accompanied Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre to Albany, including Babylon Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon. At the Conference’s annual award ceremony, Councilwoman Gordon was presented with the Joseph L. Galiber Award, which is given to an individual with the grace, elegance and oratory proficiency of a true statesperson. Gordon achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel in the United States Army in 2007 and she was deployed four times over the course of her service. She was elected to serve on the Babylon Town Board in 2006 and works as a guidance counselor for Western Suffolk BOCES.
“Councilwoman Gordon embodies what it means to be a true public servant, standing up for vulnerable populations and being a voice for the residents she represents in government,” said Jean-Pierre. “I was honored to have the privilege of presenting her with this award.”
