“From enacting measures that promote inclusivity to passing groundbreaking climate change laws, this past year was filled with victories for New York State. As we begin a new year and legislative session, the State of the State proposals announced this week will help us continue that progress by making health care more affordable, increasing gun safety, protecting senior citizens, expanding access to banking services and fighting discrimination.

“For far too long, New Yorkers with diabetes have had to put their health at risk because they can’t afford insulin as the cost of this lifesaving drug continues to skyrocket. Last year, I introduced legislation to cap the price of prescription insulin (A.8103), and I look forward to working with Governor Cuomo on his similar proposal, which would cap monthly insulin co-payments and ensure those who gouge prices are held accountable.

“We all know the tragic impact that gun violence has had on our country, and I commend the governor for working to ensure New York State continues to lead the nation in combating this epidemic. This includes proposals to prevent those who commit serious crimes in other states from receiving New York State gun licenses, as well as banning untraceable ‘ghost guns.’ These measures will not impede on the rights of responsible gun owners, but simply help prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands.

“Scammers and robocalls, who frequently target our elderly community, are more than a nuisance – they’re a threat to our privacy and personal information. I support the Governor’s proposal to combat this ongoing problem and will fight to pass legislation that blocks these calls and unmasks the corrupt individuals committing these despicable crimes. Another proposal will further protect consumers from unscrupulous business practices by licensing and regulating debt collection companies.

“Every New Yorker should have access to affordable and trustworthy financial services so they can safely manage their money and build their credit. The Governor’s proposal to expand banking options in underserved communities is a big step in the right direction and will help more hardworking individuals achieve economic security and success.

“And I’m especially proud to stand with the Governor in denouncing hate, antisemitism and discrimination in all forms. We pride ourselves in our diversity, and whether it’s targeting housing discrimination on Long Island or strengthening our hate crime statutes, I look forward to working with my colleagues in government to continue ensuring that New York is a welcoming place of opportunity for everyone.
