“The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed stark inequities in our country and state, with the rich getting richer while families of lesser means faced an even steeper hill to climb. Across New York, people were left unemployed, struggling financially, and in need of help. The state budget that we passed this week provides that assistance, levels the playing field and puts New York on track to make a comeback.

“The budget ensures record funding to education, expands access to broadband across the state and helps small businesses rebound. Instead of needlessly cutting funding to vital services – which would have brought further economic pain to New Yorkers – we ramped up our commitments to the policies and programs that make a real difference in people’s lives. I’m especially proud of the $105 million for pre-kindergarten programs that we included to help get kids off to a solid start. Nearly $3 million of this funding will help pre-kindergarten programs right here in the 11^th Assembly District. We also created a new tax credit for businesses participating in the Excelsior Jobs Program that offer new childcare programs to employees.

“I also secured critical funding for local SNUG street outreach programs to prevent gun violence, food banks whose demand has skyrocketed during the pandemic, increased funding for our libraries and other community groups that directly assist families right here at home. These programs and resources are vital and will make a huge difference in our community.

“While there is always more to do, I helped pass this state budget because it will protect our community’s interests and it will help families recover during these truly difficult times. Now more than ever, I continue to stand ready to assist you with any challenges you may be facing related to COVID-19 or any other issue. We are all in this together.”
