New York, NY – Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal today announced the Assembly's passage of the Child Victims Act, A.5885-A, which would help get dangerous pedophiles off the street and deliver long awaited justice to survivors of childhood sexual assault. The bill would:

- Extend the statute of limitations in civil cases to the age of 50.

- Create a 1 year window during which previously time-barred civil claims may be resurrected, with a six month lead in period before the window opens.

- Extend the statute of limitations in criminal cases to the age of 28 for felonies, tolling it until the victim reaches the age of 23.

"After years of fighting for justice and to protect children from dangerous pedophiles, it is past time that the Legislature puts the interests of New York State's children first and finally passes the Child Victims Act," said Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal. "Year after year, the Assembly has led on this issue, while the pleas of survivors have fallen on deaf ears in the Senate. Inaction is indefensible; and running out the clock is not an option. We demand a vote on this bill this session. Under Speaker Carl E. Heastie's leadership, the conference has shown incredible resolve and demonstrated the courage to get this done."

Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal became the sponsor of the Child Victims Act in 2017. The bill, in various forms, has passed the Assembly each time it came up for a vote. Brad Hoylman sponsors the bill in the State Senate. June 21st is last day of legislative session.
