Walsh Questions Legislature’s Priorities Following Passage of Dream Act
A statement from Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I,Ref-Ballston)
Today, after extended debate, the New York State Assembly voted on and passed the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act). While not directly addressing residency status, the legislation grants the children of illegal immigrants access to taxpayer-funded tuition assistance, while also extending legal protections for those residing in New York State illegally. The current executive budget proposal contains $27 million in state funding earmarked for the execution of this initiative.
“I am disheartened that, as hard-working, middle-class families across New York continue to struggle with high tuition costs and oppressive taxes, the Assembly Majority has yet again chosen to prioritize the needs of illegal immigrants over legal residents. As state representatives, it is our duty to ensure that our state government operates in the best interests of New York’s families, and moving forward, I will remain committed to fighting against these types of misplaced investments.”
