As the newly-appointed ranking Minority member of the Assembly Committee on Education, Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I-Ballston) participated in the Board of Regents interview process on Tuesday, February 12. The Board of Regents is comprised of 17 members who serve for five year terms: one from each of the states judicial districts and four members who serve at large. Members are unsalaried and responsible for overseeing all educational activities within the state, including SUNY and the New York State Education Department. Following the interviews, the Legislature will vote to appoint or reappoint four members whose terms are due to expire on April 1.
Our Board of Regents members are invested with considerable authority in areas including testing, professional licensure, mental health education, special education and teacher review, said Walsh. I was very impressed with the diverse personal and professional backgrounds of the candidates, which will undoubtedly add to the overall quality and effectiveness of the Board.
The outgoing regents include, Regent Josephine Victoria Finn of the 3rd Judicial District, Regent Christine D. Cea of the 13th Judicial District, Regent at large Wade Norwood and Regent at large James Cottrell.
