Walsh, Legislative Colleagues Introduce Impeachment Resolution
Today, Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I-Ballston) joined members of the Assembly Minority Conference to introduce an impeachment resolution which calls for a simple majority vote in the Assembly of at least 76 votes. If passed, the process would move to the Senate for an impeachment trial.
The governor’s cover-up of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes, coupled with five women coming forward with sexual harassment allegations, have spurred calls for Gov. Cuomo to resign. However, the governor has remained adamant that he will not step down, which has led the Minority Conference to introduce the impeachment resolution.
To date, approximately 30 members of the Assembly Majority Conference have called for the governor to resign. Combined with members of the Minority Conference, that is bringing us even closer to the 76 votes needed to pass the resolution.
“Although the allegations of misconduct continue to accrue, the governor has made it clear he has no intention of resigning,” said Walsh. “From rank-and-file members to those in prominent leadership positions, the list of legislators, on both sides of the aisle, continues to get longer. By introducing this resolution, we are offering the first step of the process and ask that the Speaker, along with the members of his conference, to seriously consider this measure. It’s time to put action behind the calls for resignation and do what’s right for our state and our residents.”
