Today, Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I-Ballston) joined the Assembly Minority Conference on a press conference via Zoom to voice concerns on the Majority’s bill to extend the state’s eviction moratorium. 

​The eviction moratorium was set to expire on May 1. However, a new bill (A.7175) would extend the moratorium until at least August 31, 2021. Small landlords from across the state were in attendance and shared their personal hardships due to the moratorium. 

​​“Although the eviction moratorium was beneficial to many New Yorkers who struggled to make ends meet during the onset and peak of the pandemic, our state and economy continues to rebuild and reopen, and I believe a further extension is excessive,” said Walsh. “Small landlords across the state are thousands upon thousands of dollars in debt. A continuation of this moratorium further extends a tenant’s ability to take advantage of the situation. The passage of this legislation potentially allows another four months without rent payments coming in and nowhere to turn for assistance.

​“After hearing from landlords who have been faced with these issues firsthand in the district I represent, as well as statewide, it seems only right to join my colleagues in expressing our objection to the extension of this moratorium. It’s time to help these small property owners get back on their feet.”
