Slater Hosts Lunch for Local Law Enforcement
Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) and Assemblyman John McGowan (R,C-Rockland) hosted a lunch and legislative meeting with members from the law enforcement community earlier this week. Slater has fostered a strong relationship with those on the police force and they discussed their opinions on bail reform and increased judicial discretion. Crime and public safety have been major topics of discussion in the Legislature bail reform was originally passed in 2019. Minority state legislators held a press conference earlier this week with law enforcement, crime victims, victims’ advocates and others to discuss their deep concerns about these laws and how they plan to make changes.
"We can't fix cashless bail responsibly unless law enforcement is given a seat at the table. Addressing out-of-control crime is New Yorkers' top priority, and I am committed to working with groups like the Affiliate Police Associations of Westchester to formulate the necessary solutions that will keep our families safe. I am proud to be their voice in the Assembly because they proudly protect our communities," said Slater.
"The APA appreciates the opportunity to speak with Assemblymen Slater and McGowan about our state legislative priorities for 2023,” said Keith Olson, President of the Affiliated Police Association of Westchester.“Assemblymen Slater and McGowan are strong supporters of local police who understand the importance of strong public safety in our state."
“I want to thank Assemblyman Matt Slater for hosting a productive and important lunch to address public safety directly with law enforcement officials. As my first year in the Assembly progresses, I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure we give greater judicial discretion, tighten our public safety policies once again and protect our communities. Without safe communities, we don’t have productive economies, schools or families, which is why this needs to be a top priority in Albany,” said McGowan.
