Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) continued his outspoken opposition to Gov. Hochul’s aggressive housing mandates today at a press conference in Albany held by Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square) and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. Hochul’s housing plan, if part of the Enacted Budget due by Saturday, April 1, would mandate municipalities meet a quota of new construction housing units in the coming years or risk the state overriding local zoning laws. Separately, the governor has proposed that municipalities meet “Transit-Oriented Housing” quotas around train or subway stations as part of her budget proposal.

“I’ve never seen such a blatant attack on New York’s suburbs, taxpayers and our quality of life as with Governor Hochul’s high-rise housing plan. Both Minority and Majority lawmakers from every region of the state joined us today to oppose this plan. We can enhance our housing stock but a one-size-fits-all state mandate is not the answer,” Slater said. “If the Governor was serious about solving the housing issues facing New York State she would be collaborating with local officials to assist with the planning process, infrastructure needs and school district impacts. Actions speak louder than words and it is clear the Governor just doesn’t care about how her proposal will hurt the Hudson Valley and municipalities across New York State.”
