Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) and fellow representatives paid a visit to Camp Herrlich on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. Camp Herrlich came about when Wilbur Herrlich, part of the Herrlich family, tragically lost his life to appendicitis in 1922. Before his passing, Wilbur harbored a heartfelt wish: that his family would generously donate their farm to create a haven where children from New York City could escape to the serene countryside and embrace the wonders of nature during the summer. Moved by his selfless desire, the Herrlich family embraced Wilbur’s dream and wholeheartedly offered their farm to the Lutheran Inner Mission Society, later known as Lutheran Social Services. Thus, Camp Herrlich came into being.

During its early years, Camp Herrlich became a beacon of hope and joy for many Lutheran churches in New York City. After decades of operation and with its popularity increasing, Camp Herrlich now offers an incredible range of opportunities for kids of all ages and from anywhere to come and explore endless fun and possibilities.

“It was such a great opportunity to go and visit Camp Herrlich and witness all that they do. Having spent time here as a youth, and after touring their campgrounds and meeting their staff members, I was reminded what a jewel this is for Hudson Valley families. This camp offers such a rich history with an important message that shines through in their day-to-day routine. They take great pride in emphasizing the importance in maximizing opportunity for educational, social and physical growth,” said Slater.

“During my visit to Camp Herrlich this week, I was deeply inspired. I am committed to supporting their initiatives and truly believe in their missions’ positive impact on our community, Said Assemblyman Anil Beephan.

“Camp Herrlich is an important summer resource for our state's children seeking a warm and welcoming environment in which they can develop life skills, experience the natural world, and just have fun being kids. I am grateful to the camp's leadership for running such an effective program that continues to help so many young people more than 100 years after it was founded,” said Sen. Rob Rolison.

Camp Herrlich is recognized by many for its exceptional work and was nominated for the National Presidential Points of Light award and judged to be among the top 50 organizations to make a lasting contribution to society.
